Window guard/block for cats?

cutebastardette asked:

Basically I want to get a cat really bad. And this is going to sound bad but… I’m currently renting at an apartment that does not allow pets. (My lease ends in summer 2008) I know cats love the windows but I don’t want the cat bopping up in case management happens to walk by. Does anyone know of any way to somehow block off the windows? Like some sort of contraption? The windows have horizontal blinds… Any suggestions?

If your apartment doesn’t allow pets either don’t have them or move to some place that does. There’s lots of places that allow pets - especially cats. Do you really want to get caught, get evicted and lose any last month or security deposit you have at your place?

Yes, I second the first post. Plus, if you get busted that means the cat ends up at a shelter and probably gets euthanized. It isn’t fair to the cat. Most shelters will call your landlord to see if your lease allows pets also.

Wow, I pity the poor cat that can never see the outside world of birds, squirrels and blowing leaves. Perhaps you should look for a blind cat at the rescue or shelter. Blind cats can do pretty much everything that a seeing cat can. Here’s a link that places them:

I honestly think that this is not the right time for you to get a cat. I think you know this. Listen to yourself. You’re pretty much talking about boarding up your windows from the inside. Don’t you think that management is going to find that somewhat suspicious.

Summer 2008 is less than a year from now. You can wait that long and start looking for apartments that allow pets.

If you really wanted a cat despite the fact that your building does not allow it the horizontal blinds should keep the cat out of the windows, mine do. Of course you could always put decorative window films over all your windows. That would allow some light in and no one would EVER see the cat. Here’s a link to what I’m talking about.=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100079311

You might be able to block off the visual but cats meow as well which might alert someone walking by a window or door. It will also look odd if you keep carrying things like scratching posts and litter into your apartment.

Otherwise, you can place books or something similar between the window and the blinds and then close the blinds completely. Whatever it is should push the bottom edge of the blind out so that there is no window ledge for a cat to jump up onto.

You might have to place the cat inside a bathroom or an interior room of some kind. It seems like more stress than it is worth especially since you have less than a year to go.
