white blinds in windows of an apartment complex?
lynnepeterpan asked:
I live in an apartment complex and they are requesting that we have either shades or blinds in white or cream colored .Their reasoning is that they would like everything to be uniform and neat appearing. some people had blankets and sheets of all color. we are allowed to have colored curtains on the windows as long as they are white on the backing or have a white blind or shade. opinions please

Go with the white blinds or shades, then use curtains in the color of your choice, never mind the backing. That way everyone will be happy.

I would go with the curtains. That way you can have any color you want and the landlord will be happy too. Blinds are a pain in the **** to clean anyways.

White blinds go great with any color and actually look really good when you pair them with funky colored curtains. Besides, 2 layers will keep your room darker at night. I always get annoyed when apartment buildings or neighborhoods have strict rules, but when your neighbor wants to paint his house purple those rules start to look pretty good.

Although people like to be unique, I can see why an apt complex would have such a rule. The towels, sheets, blankets as window coverings just look cheap and in some cases, trashy.
Property owners tend to want their property to look nice. One window with blue blinds, and one with mauve, and one with white, and one with wood doesn’t do anything for the overall look of the building.
Do you have an issue with it? If so, why? White and ivory are the more common colors of blinds, and tend to be the cheapest as well. Where I live, the place had blinds when I moved in (apt). But I don’t know if the complex pays to replace them if they are damaged/stolen by tenants that move out or if the next people that move in replace them.

I can see their point. But if they are going to dictate the type of window dressing, it should be installed before you move in and THEY should pay for it so they can be confident that their requirements are met.

You find this so many times, I think it’s stupid, take people’s rights away… You can find some alternatives for this, most cellular blinds, are white to the street, and colored on the interior, you can also find some alluminum blinds that do this also. I have some Levolor blinds that are white to the street, and Black on the inside of my room. Hope this helps.

I found this ebay guide on Window Treatments very interesting.
