What are some good window treatments in a house with an over active golden retriever?

NJ Engineer asked:

I have a golden puppy and he loves sitting on the couch and looking out the front window. He has also destroyed the vertical blinds I had in the front window and mini blinds that I had on the side window and back door window and kitchen window. What would be some good options to put up that will look good, let him see out, and he won’t likely destroy?
He has been trained, but he is still a puppy. He has a lot of energy. A vast majority of the damage to the vertical blinds was done when he was less than 6 months old. I haven’t seen him damage them further since then. The mini blinds are down in 2 of the 3 places, in the 3rd they are still up, but get mangled when he jumps up on me.

Anyone who has a golden knows that they are very energetic dogs up until several years old.

He also has plenty of toys.
I have been told by several people that breed goldens that they normally mature and get past that puppy stage between 2 and 3 years of age. I am no professional dog handler by any stretch of the imagination.

My golden is 20 months old now.

Proper training would probably be your best (and cheapest bet). Altho’, you could also look in to getting some outside shutters.

First I would say train the dog….

Next I would say to open the blinds and let him look out

Holy… sounds like that dog needs some toys to play with instead of the window treatments! If he is eating vertical blinds then there isn’t going to be a different option out there that he won’t eat from the way it sounds! You can get this window tint stuff for your house (I think it’s mostly used in business window but you can put it in any window)… it would be a window cling that you can see through but it would keep the sun rays out of your house.

Don’t worry, he will grow out of it. You don’t say how old he is now but I have found that they do stop this sort of destructive behaviour once they are mature, after 12 months I would say.

My puppies attacked my blinds on the Conservatory windows when they were younger. They are now 17 months old and don’t even give them a second glance.

Perhaps you could put up some Roman Blinds which look very nice but they can be pulled up out of his reach.

Try and get him a big marrow bone from your Butcher or a Large Smokey Bone from the Pet Shop to gnaw on. This might take his mind off destroying the blinds.

Things will get better so hang on in there. Good luck.
