Is it wrong to look in someone’s window if they don’t shut the blinds?

Evol asked:

This is one of those questions that can be argued either way. I’d like to hear your thoughts.
wyomugs, you forgot about the little detail of the blinds being open and you missed the point entirely.
Also people are taking this way too seriously. It is a hypothetical question.

It’s annoying!!

I live on a country lane, so we don’t usually shut them as there aren’t that many people around.

But it drives me nuts when people literally stare into the living room. I swear to god i’ve actually had eye contact with people walking past.

Just look forward!

Well if you are watering your yard and you notice she didn;t shut her blinds shame on her, you need to be ever so subblte, and mention it to her,
HOWEVER If she doesn’t close her blinds and it is evening and you climb a tree to do more “bird watching” than you are so wrong

it depends what they’re doing inside. and how intently your looking.

It’s a free country. People will get annoyed that their privacy is invaded. But if they want it so that nobody knows whats inside, they should leave it closed. Try not to stare. If you want, sneak a peek out of the corner of your eyes.

Well i wouldnt say opening their blinds in an ivitation saying “Hey world here i am! come stare at me!”
but unless you feel you are doing something wrong, or looking/staring for long periods, or repeatedly, then no nothing is wrong in looking in an open window

No, but don’t stop and stare. The trouble is not so much the looking, it is the seeing. If you don’t want to see something that you would rather not have seen, then it is best to avoid looking, even if the blinds are open. You are somewhat responsible for what you see if you go out of your way to look.

Yes. Think of it like this: It’s a beautiful sunny day, so you open the blinds in your office. You are enjoying the warn sunshine on your back, when you notice someone staring at you through the window. Should you be forced to block out the sunshine and the view just cause someone is staring at you?

How can it be argued “either way”????

If somone has shut their blinds, that is an absolute statement that the person desires PRIVACY… PERIOD. So if you decide to peer in (as best you CAN when blinds are shut properly!) is an INVASION of their PRIVACY. It used to be known as being a PEEPING TOM… and in most communities it is not only IMPOLITE but ILLEGAL.

So HOW is it argued ANY OTHER way than this????

Have a polite day.

Why would you be looking??? I think the response to that should answer your question, because your intention is what counts and I can’t imagine there is a good reason for looking into someone’s private space
