How do I train my dog to not jump on my window?
luckygal713 asked:
My 1 year old cocker spaniel perches up on my window sill to look out whenever I leave. The problem is she tears my blinds to shreds if I forget to pull them up. As long as I pull them up higher than she can reach, it’s ok. But I don’t think I can keep doing that her whole life. It wasn’t so much of an issue until she broke some VERY expensive wood blinds at my friend’s house. I’ve tried spraying bitter apple spray on the blinds and window to deter her, but have had no luck. Also I can’t catch her in the act to tell her it’s wrong because she only does it when I’m gone. Does anyone have any ideas?

Move your furniture away so she can’t jump in it, or buy those insulators that people get for the windows in the winter to keep her off it. Those shrink wrap ones….that you use the blow dryer on, it’ll create a harmless seal to keep her out of it..unless she’s smart enough or can reach it to rip it to shreds

I would suggest some crate training. Sounds like she might have some separation anxiety. The crate will keep her from jumping on the window and destroying any blinds.
Also, I just saw these in my pet store. Can’t seem to find them on line though. They are called ‘Clappers’. They look like very weak mouse traps with these huge red paddles on them. When set up correctly, you can place them on the couch, or simply places where you want to train your dog not to be. Then with your dog touches it it will snap quickly together and makes a huge ‘clap’ sound which startles your dog (or cat), but does not hurt them. Its pretty much a ‘catching them in the act’ via use of a noisy tool.
Not sure if they work since I haven’t personally tried them, but they might help in your situation. Just an idea.
You might also want to speak to a trained/professional dog behaviorist.
