Can anyone suggest a window/sliding glass door covering that would keep my apartment cooler?

Tatersalad asked:

With the cost of living rising in all directions I’m trying to keep the household energy costs down. And since I’m not at home during the day it’s o.k. not to run the air conditioning. BUT…when I do get home it takes soooooo long for my apartment to cool down that my bill is out rageoulsy high during the summer. Unfortunately for me my apartment gets direct sunlight most of the day. I have blinds that are closed all day but the heat still comes through. Any suggestions?

Home improvement stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s have a film that can be applied to glass and you can get varying degrees of UV protection. Better ask your landlord first, though.

we have a window that faces direct sun also..

go to walmart and in the camping section get whats called a “solar ” blanket.. they cost about 1.87.. it’s highly reflective… i taped that into the inside of the window.. it looked silly but it really cut the heat to that room.. what was great about it was you could see people coming up to your house but they can’t see in..

also don’t turn your ac off… just set it slighly higher.. that way when you get home the house wont be so hot.

Aluminum foil on the windows works wonders in keeping the heat out. It looks sorta ghetto from outside. If you have a balcony in front of a window or glass door, invest in some potted trees, ficus, birch, etc… Invest in some fans to run all day long, its cheaper to run them all day long than it is to cool down your whole place when you get home. Good luck.

I would rec. you install a ceiling fan keep it on low and set your a/c thermostat to 80-82. Your a/c unit will not have to work as hard to cool off all those hot BTU’s in the apt. the apt. will maintain itself cool and when you get home you can then crank it to whatever setting you prefer. I lived in Florida for 17 years and this kept my light bill affordable. You may also want to install Hi-UV reflective window screening..(that’s right the same type you put into your vehicle)…on those windows that face the sun when it’s most intense…..Good Luck and stay COOL!

Make sure to keep your windows open at night(if possible) and closed during the day. This will keep heat out. Also, completely white blinds will reflect any light that hits them, which should do the trick. Also, if you’re ac is the kind to only kick in at certain temps, fans and a reasonable setting should keep the place cool during the day. This way, the ac would only kick in for a few minutes every once in a while, to keep it at a somewhat cool level. This would be more cost effcient than trying to go from hot as hell all in one go.
